I was really excited for this movie, a Karan Johar Diwali release with a fabulous star cast sounded so promising. When the trailer dropped I was even more excited, the story was ambiguous but I knew there would be glamour, great locations and major DRAMA!
Sadly, I was disappointed. I watched this movie on a Friday night in a sold out San Francisco theatre and the most enjoyable part of the evening was my reclining chair. The movie tells the story of spoiled brat and lost in life Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) and who even knows what she does but she looks great; Alizeh (Anushka Sharma). The story is complicated and overly dramatic for no apparent reason. Fawad Khan and Aishwarya Rai make very short appearances and while their characters do help further the story they are sadly forgettable.
Ranbir is a great actor and his acting is the only likeable part about Ayan’s character. His character reminded me of a Ted Mosby (HIMYM) or Ross (Friends). Although he is likeable, there is something off putting about his childish behavior and his neediness. Sometimes the character just comes across as a little pathetic. Anushka does a great job portraying the steadfast and carefree Alizeh. The true hero of this story is the chemistry between Ranbir and Anushka. They seem to have an effortless and genuine friendship which is truly fun to watch.
I would watch this movie for the AMAZING songs, great locations (brb going to Vienna), some hilarious moments, Ranbir and Anushka’s chemistry and probably my most favorite: the scenes involving Lisa Haydon.
Favorite song (couldn’t choose just one):
